Thanks for the comment Shawn. I got some interesting letters in response, some of which appeared in the Otago Daily Times, some of which appeared on their website, and a couple of other letters . . . my favourite was the one that explained that spaceships were watching us. Who knows . . .

I have often wondered why people spend so much time in churches praising "God," and why they put forth so much of their hard-earned income as tithing, instead of spending time and money in their own communities, helping their fellow citizens. So much could be done with that money, in that time.

Religion is just a form of brainwashing, and that brainwashing is perpetuated through the generations, using scripture that is outdated and false, and written, supposedly, by hundreds of people--very likely all men who had no respect at all for women.

To believe that a woman was created from the rib of a man is preposterous. Then, to blame this rib-turned-woman for giving in to temptation by taking a bite of the so-called "forbidden fruit", with the consequence being banishment from the Garden of Eden, is just an example of how men have always had the superior edge. It's as if God was playing a cruel joke on the poor woman. The bible is filled to the brim with such absurdities, and yet, a large majority of people use it to guide them through life. If you really think hard about it, it's pretty terrifying.

Think about a fairly recent event in Waco, Texas, where Bill Nye the Science Guy was entertaining a group of children and their parents. He brought up Genesis 1:16, which reads: "God made two great lights -- the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars." When Bill Nye mentioned the scientific fact, that the moon is merely a reflector, he was booed, and several people stormed out. One woman, with her three kids in tow, said, "We believe in God."

I have my parents to thank, and I thank them profusely, for taking me out of the Catholic church when I was just seven--just before confirmation. They just couldn't come up with a sin for me to confess. Thank you again Mom and Dad!
